A game day tradition across college football is the players walking from the bus into the stadium. It’s a symbolic metamorphous of the student athlete transforming into a proverbial gladiator. For Jackson State University, its Tiger Walk enters a stadium versus a coliseum, but the meaning is the same.
In 2022 the Tigers were walking into battle against Southern University in the SWAC Championship game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Earlier in the year Jackson State had defeated Southern University 35-0 in a regular season matchup that was featured on ESPN’s College Gameday.
On this Saturday afternoon the players marched through a cascade of cheering fans gathered in the parking lot readying for the game. Fans created a makeshift roadway for the players cheering and saluting them from either side.
“I’m ready,” Gillie Da King said. “There’s only one thing that’s going down today, and that’s called an A-W, ass whipping”
Gillie is a rapper and dear friend of Deion Sanders. He’s been a big supporter of the program at Jackson State and a constant fixture in the locker room and the sidelines.
