Early on in spring practice a reporter asked Deion Sanders about the altitude in Boulder and his thoughts on how that might impact future opponents. Boulder’s elevation is listed at 5,430 feet above sea level for the record. The answer was what the reporter might come to expect from a Coach Prime press conference. Authentic and no where near coach speak.
“First of all, I have to learn what it is. I need to learn what it is and how it’s going to effect and infect us, and help us. I’ve got to learn all that stuff. That wasn’t my major,” Sanders quipped.
As he continued on, one might be left with the impression that he’s not going to spend too much time on reverse engineering altitude. He seemed to be more interested in the attitude of players opposed to the altitude.
“Football is football. I’m not into all that stuff. You ever notice whoever is getting their butts kicked, gets tired, whoever’s winning don’t,” he continued.
Sanders then went on to explain what he saw at that day’s practice.
“We saw that today. When the defense was getting their butt kicked, they were tired. When they were winning, they were never tired. That’s just football. That’s just life, it’s just a trick of the the mind. We can’t fall prey to it.”
It’s to be determined if altitude will make the scouting report for Coach Prime, but at this point it doesn’t appear to be a safe bet.
