One of the most dynamic set of teammates in NFL history were back together again this week in Boulder, Colorado. Michael Irvin, a legend of the Dallas Cowboys, joined his former teammate Deion Sanders at a Colorado football practice on Wednesday.
Coach Prime introduced Irvin by giving him all of the necessary accolades he earned as a foe in practice and the times when they weren’t teammates.
“This is one of the toughest receivers, if not the toughest receiver I’ve ever played against, in my life. when you played against him, you have to bring your lunch pale, because he was coming,” Sanders said.
Irvin immediately set the tone for his talk by reminding the Buffs the importance of teamwork and putting in the work at practice.
“There’s no such thing as individual, isolated success in football. In football, you don’t do anything all by yourself. It’s always it’s always about the man next to you. If you look to the left and the right every day, I’m not talking about game day. I’m talking every day. I make a promise, one man to the other. I will get my job done today. that’s how you win football games,” Irvin told the group.
Cowboys practice was harder than the games
He even parlayed how the success he and Sanders enjoyed with the Dallas Cowboys was all a result of their effort in practice.
“When I got ready to play, we got ready to play. The best way I can make sure I beat Jerry Rice is to get Deion ready. So let’s go. Time we got to work. I need you to shut down Jerry Rice. I got to get you ready right here, right now. That’s what you guys should be doing. Getting each other ready. Then you’ll be looking, can’t wait to jump on other people,” he said.
The team was completely locked in as Irvin spoke with several players seeking a quick moment with him after the speech. Irvin’s passion was palpable as he spoke to the team, showing the same energy he had as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
The message of what it takes to be great comes at an opportune time for CU. The Buffs closing in on the one week countdown to the season opener.
