Pastors E. Dewey Smith and Keion Henderson showed up at The Rose Bowl last week to support Deion Sanders and The Buffs. The pair spoke on the importance of someone of Sanders’ magnitude bringing the word of God to his fanbase.
It’s Our Job to Protect Him
Pastor Henderson stressed the importance of Sanders’ message and work being protected at all costs.
“Yeah, I mean, listen, other nationalities have their heroes,” Henderson said. “And typically in [Black] communities, we assassinate our own. I think it’s our job to protect him because he has to live. And I mean that both physically and spiritually. Like, we got to pray for him and cover him, because very rarely do you have somebody at that echelon who stands behind these microphones and says to God be the glory.”
Have the Utmost Respect for Coach Deion Sanders
Pastor Smith sees the beauty in Deion’s success and faith being shared with his players, something that has a very positive impact in their lives and the community.
“Well, you know, my brother and I, Pastor Henderson and I, both of us have the utmost respect for Coach Prime,” Smith said. “And then the fact that, you know, both of us were athletes, [Henderson] in basketball and me in football, to be able to bring faith and football together and see what he’s doing for the culture, for the kingdom, is exciting. It’s almost like reliving my days of playing, but seeing faith exhibit here on the football field is a beautiful thing.”
