In the world of sports, especially at the collegiate level, recognition is the ultimate validation of a player’s talent and hard work. For Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes, the 2023 season was extraordinary. Five exceptional players have earned coveted spots on the All-Pac-12 Conference Team to show for it. Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, Mark Vassett, Dylan Edwards, and Shilo Sanders have not only made their mark on the field, but have also etched their names in the annals of Colorado football history.
1. Shedeur Sanders – The Prodigy Holding the Reigns of the Offense
Leading the charge for the Colorado Buffaloes is none other than quarterback sensation Shedeur Sanders. With a remarkable ability to read defenses and deliver precision passes, Sanders was been the driving force behind the team’s offensive prowess. His leadership qualities and impressive 3,230 passing yards (a Colorado school record) and 27 touchdowns have rightfully earned him a spot on this list as an Honorable Mention Quarterback. He has solidified his reputation as one of the most promising quarterbacks in collegiate football as he tries to make a Heisman run in the Big 12 next year.
2. Travis Hunter – The Versatile Dynamo on Both Sides of the Ball
Travis Hunter was a force to be reckoned with during his sophomore season. Before going down with an injury towards the midway point of the season, his name was being circled in Heisman talks more and more each week. His prominence comes from his ability to play on both sides of the ball — and do it well, too.
As a standout cornerback, Hunter’s shut-down coverage skills and contribution to key defensive plays have made him a nightmare for opposing offense. It’s helped him land his name on the First-Team Defensive Back Team. Additionally, his features as a pass catcher are equally impressive. Posting 721 receiving yards in nine games, Hunter showed opposing defenses how essential it was for them to make sure they did their best to neutralize him. His mentality is simple: if you are in his way, watch out. He’s going to make a play over you. Such a “dog” way of thinking on both sides of the ball has allowed him to be placed on the Second-Team All-Purpose squad.
3. Mark Vassett – The Dominant Punter from Australia
A team’s special teams unit can often decide the results of a football game. Luckily for the Buffs, the punt team was one that didn’t need to be worried about too often. Vassett served as a stalwart presence behind the long snapper. With an average of 44.4 yards per punt, Vassett’s ability to leave the ball deep inside opposing territory has not gone unnoticed, as he has earned an Honorable Mention for the punters in the Pac-12.
4. Dylan Edwards – Explosive Running Back
No football team is complete without a dynamic running back. Freshman running back Dylan Edwards fits the bill perfectly for the Buffaloes. Despite his small frame, Edwards’ explosive speed and ability to break tackles have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. His stellar performances on the ground have not only contributed to Colorado’s offensive success but have also secured him a well-deserved spot as an Honorable Mention as a Freshman of the Year.
5. Shilo Sanders – Versatile Safety
Leading the Pac-12 in multiple statistical categories, Shilo Sanders was a dominant factor at the safety position for CU. His earth-shattering hits and improving ball-hawking skills made him a weapon deep in the Buffalo secondary. It’s earned him an Honorable Mention at the Safety position.
The Colorado football program has reason to celebrate as five of its outstanding players earned well-deserved spots on the All-Pac-12 Conference Team. Their contributions have elevated the Buffaloes to new heights and solidified their places as some of the most talented and impactful players in collegiate football. As these athletes continue to shine, the future looks bright for Buffalo football.
