Stephen Houston is an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Colorado. But the one thing the Little Rock, Arkansas native quickly learned from Coach Maurice Sims is to act like he’s in charge.
Everybody’s a head strength coach, Coach Mo demands that. Coach Mo say don’t act like a head strength coach when you get the job, be one now. If you see something wrong call it. If I miss it, let me know. Call it right then and don’t there. Don’t wait till later because I can’t see everything. That’s why I have you guys. But act accordingly as a head strength coach.
The one thing Houston demands from his players is accountability. If the drill isn’t done right, you have to do it again. When a player was walking on the field and not running, the entire unit had to do up-downs. Accountability is a part of a winning culture according to Houston and he believes in building it from class to class.
“We can go through a full off season and see their minds change, their body change and see their attitude change. They can help the next class that comes in, just follow the culture of a winning mentality. The wins on the field are going to come, but you have to get the mentality first,” Houston said.
Accountability begins with self and Houston demands it from within. It helps make for a great relationship with Coach Prime whose responsible for getting the best out of every player, coach and staff member.
“It’s been a blessing, every time we speak it’s always good vibes. But he demand the best out of you. and that’s easy because we demand the best out of ourselves, I demand the best out of myself to the highest degree of accuracy,” he said.
Houston considers himself a Swiss army knife on the staff and at some point he’s probably going to touch all of the position groups.
I work with combo, skill, the trenches, but I also work with our return to play guys. So, you know, unfortunately, injuries occur. So when those things happen, you know, I’m the guy that starts the rehabilitation process within the weight room. Once they’re cleared to start moving weight and start putting weight on that extremity. Right now, thank God, we are free and clear from the return to play room. So I’m just I’m just in everybody’s pocket.”
