When you hear the name “L Boogie” you would probably assume a grand personality of some sort. However, only one person claims that name under Coach Sanders, and that’s Lauren “L Boogie” Askevold.
Lauren is one of Coach Sanders’ athletic trainers and has been with Prime since Jackson State University. She plays a pivotal role in rehabilitation for players coming off injuries, which is a very nasty yet normal part of the game.
It’s safe to say with the injuries from last year’s season, Askevold has her hands full this coming season.
Making Sure Everything is Going Okay
When asked what her role was, Askevold went into depth as to how she helps rehabilitate players on the injured list for The Buffs.
“Just make sure everything’s going okay,” she said. “I have two kids that are post-surgical out there, so we make sure that they’re doing what they’re supposed to do.”
I Push What I Can Get Out of Them
Lauren also stresses the importance of understanding there’s no clear or concise day of clearing an athlete. After an adequate time to heal, she does push the athletes to their highest potential so they can get back on the field as soon as they can.
“We try to keep them on schedule, right?” she said. “There’s no clear, concise, like, ‘Hey, you’re clear this day.’ It’s like with, for instance, a shoulder injury, right? A shoulder surgery, labrum. It’s between 22 and 24 weeks, their clearance.”
During that 22 and 24 weeks, Askevold said “they’re not not doing anything with that shoulder.”
“I have one who’s week 12 post-op, so now he’s able to incorporate more, able to do more in the weight room, able to do more with me, able to do more with the team,” she said. “So there’s no clear, concise, like, ‘Oh, you’re cleared.’ But my athletes who I work with, I would say I’m probably less concerned, so I do push them to what I can get out of them.”
As more players come off of the injury list, L Boogie will have more trying tasks ahead. Coach Prime trusts that she is up to the task!
