This Tuesday marked the fourth practice of spring ball for this year’s Colorado Buffaloes. So far, Coach Andre Hart is liking what he’s seeing from his group.
“..there’s confidence [in] what we did last year. Of course [that’s] not how we wanted to end, but we know that’s something to build on. We’re excited this year about the guys who have come in, and the guys who are coming back have been developing and getting better. During this spring game, you’re going to see some really good action I think.”
Last year’s Buffalo squad saw some inconsistencies at the linebacker position, which resulted in mediocre performances towards the downpipe of the season. This offseason brought in a plethora of new defensive talent for Colorado football, and Coach Hart assures players who can defend both the pass and the run simultaneously are being reconnoitered.
“This year coming into it, our guys have developed and gotten better, but we haven’t put the pads on yet. The first day was today and there was a little bit of hitting, but not as physical as you want to for you to make a good evaluation [about] if a guy is good at the run or the pass. That’s what I’m looking for out of the group I have now. Prime wants to push the envelope and create competition, which I love… We have some guys that we’d still like to figure out and go after, but right now we’re focusing on what we have in-house and making those guys better.”
Competition has been a key point of this year’s spring so far, and Coach Hart emphasizes how crucial it is to build a solid linebacking room.
“[The guys] are getting up earlier. They’re eating breakfast at four [am] instead of six, I love it… These guys are trying to show that they are ready to be that guy to lead the defense out there on Saturdays.”
