Deion Sanders to media: Do a little more homework

Coach Prime clarifies Colorado's temperature on the transfer portal

Anytime a player leaves Colorado via the transfer portal it’s news, like really big news. It’s a sign of the standing of Colorado in the college football discussion and it’s just another day in the constant news cycle that surrounds Deion Sanders. So this week when five star recruit Cormani McClain announced he was in the portal, along with several other CU players, the chatter began about this being a detriment to the Colorado program.

But on Thursday, Coach Prime decided it was time to bring some clarity to the conversation on the transfer portal.  He started by turning the tables at his press conference and asking questions of his own.

“I wish you guys do a little more homework when you start talking about the portal and understand, what we are losing. What are we losing? I got time today,” Sanders said as he let the question hang in the air to silence.

After a few awkward moments a member of the media suggested that Colorado was losing potential starters at the tight end and running back positions, and Sanders continued on.

“Potential starters? Tight end, running back. You haven’t been watching practice,” and Sanders once again let the question linger as it wasn’t answered to his satisfaction.

After a non verbal waving of the flag, symbolized by the continued silence. Coach Prime pivoted to answers with one brief word.

“Amen.”

The type of amen that seemed to signify his point was proven. What Colorado lost in the transfer portal so far doesn’t translate to worries on his end.

“We’re good. I trust, the recruiting team, trust our coaches. Please have some faith in me. We’re good. We all right. What happens with the portal, man? And you guys need to know a lot of people are fighting for backups. When a guy’s a starter and he transfers, you got to really think about that.  I mean, is he really that? I don’t know how many starters have really transferred around the country. I think we got some coming in for visits pretty soon, maybe even this weekend. But we can attract those type of players. But I don’t think we’re losing those type of players. And if we do, we’re good. We’re good,” Sanders said.

He then alluded to more that he wanted to say, but realized his initial answer was enough to prove the point he wanted to make.

“Quit making a big deal out of nothing. I want to say so much stuff, but I can’t. God I want to say so much stuff I keep remembering I’m a head coach,” he said.

While the portal door has swung open allowing players to leave, Sanders says there is much more coming in to fill any holes that the Buffs may have.

“Always depth. I think every coach wants depth. You want depth at the offensive line. We’re going to bring in several more of those guys, defensive interior guys as well. We got pass rushers coming, a couple already signed. I think we had four defensive backs as well that’s coming. Two already signed. A couple of linebackers going to  come in. I think we already got a commitment from a tight end,  I believe.  I know where we are. You’ll find out where we are real soon.”
