I’m not the only longtime Colorado resident who Is greatly impressed by the “Coach Prime Effect” – and I’m not just talking about the CU Buffs.
I’m in awe of how a primarily white Boulder and the CU campus, which did not have the greatest record in attracting and keeping minority students, is growing into a desired destination for students of color.
CU officials reported that in the last year the university increased its overall minority students by 30 percent, including Black enrollment by 50.5 percent; Latino by 25.6 percent; and American Indian and Alaskan Native students by 15 percent.
Coach Prime has helped recruit those students by loudly telling anyone who will listen that he loves Boulder, and he’s embraced on a campus that is nearly 68 percent white.
Why does that matter beyond the campus? Every time Thee Pregame Show, Well Off Media or Reach the People posts a video of CU, the whole state benefits.
Those videos are showing the world the state’s beauty and opportunities for college students, tourists and ultimately businesses.
When out of town business people visit my consulting office in Denver, not one has left the meetings without asking, “Where can I buy some CU gear?”
By the way, the university reported that Colorado Buffaloes gear in the team’s online store increased by more than 500 percent since Coach Prime arrived.
Of course, the underbelly of hate also surfaces when ignorant people fear the change. But the majority is embracing Coach Prime’s message of opportunity.
I, for one, believe in the “Coach Prime Effect” because in my lifetime I’d never thought the culture of CU and Boulder could make such a seismic change.
