It was 10/8/22, undefeated Jackson State led by Coach Prime, just defeated the SWAC conference foe – Alabama State in front of a sold out homecoming game crowd! The game ends followed by the traditional head coaches meet and handshake at midfield where Coach Eddie Robinson, Jr. of Alabama State proceeds to break away from Coach Prime’s attempt for a hug embrace. Then, storms off to give his infamous, “He ain’t SWAC” post-game interview, forever attaching him to those regrettable remarks which made him an internet meme and the subject for a song (that was a real bop) for the rest of his career as a coach.
We all know Jay Norvell’s blunder at trying to be witty and cool with his “hat and sunglasses” statement prior to his hilarious caught on camera, head-scratching clip after #2’s 98-yard comeback drive and eventual legendary victory for the Buffs.
And how can we forget Oregon’s Head Coach, Dan Lanning’s pre-rehearsed, vein popping war cry; “They’re fighting for clicks, we’re fighting for wins” pregame speech. Unbeknownst to him, that phrase is now being used as a laugh now cry later joke every time a loss or failed attempt at a playoff and championship run happens, for as long as he coaches.
When are these coaches gonna learn that EVERY TIME they try to say something slick about or at Coach Prime, the flip back is going to stick to them a whole lot longer than their dig attempts at the GOAT ever will. They believe that their wordplay is Kendrick Lamar-ish but, it just ends up sounding like Drake.
This is a public service announcement to every Head Coach in college football or sports, in general. I’m begging you. Please don’t clown yourselves trying to sound cool or hip or motivational by verbally shooting at Prime. Just be like USC’s Coach, Lincoln Riley and give a shake and a hug so you don’t end up on the back of a t-shirt with your goofy phrase attached to it or become a TikTok video where people are bouncing and twerking to a hot beat made up of you looking and sounding your worst. I’m just saying, you know how petty that Sanders family can get. Don’t start nothing, won’t be nothing.
