Future of Sports Illustrated is Bleak after 7 Deion Sanders Covers

This magazine was a big stepping stone for sports fans to learn more about Prime Time.

Sports Illustrated has been a mecca for showcasing some of the greatest sports figures known in history.

Names of all-time greats have appeared on the cover of the world-renowned magazine, with intention to showcase their talents and let sports fans across all areas know whose careers they should be peeking into.

Such names have included Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Floyd Mayweather, Muhammad Ali — and of course, you guessed it, Deion Sanders himself — aka Prime Time.

Seven Times

In fact, Deion Sanders has appeared on the cover for a total of seven times! This is a big deal, seeing that although plenty of football teams make the cover, it is rare that an individual football player makes it on the cover. This solidifies them as once-in-a-lifetime athletes. To put it simply, you have to be “good good.”

Some would probably say Sanders might in fact be one of the very few players who has appeared on the cover in various categories — this being for football, baseball, and now coaching!

A Bleak Future

A week ago, most of the employees at Sports Illustrated were laid off. Others were told after 90 days, their employment was uncertain. This predicament is unfortunate, especially since this magazine was a big stepping stone for sports fans to learn more about Prime Time.

A number of factors have led to the fall of the publication’s influence. With the rise of social media, fans have just about every angle and every shot of a game’s action at their fingertips.  The power of a single image printed on a magazine cover just doesn’t hit the same, but it’s important to acknowledge how important it once was.

This all speaks levels to how monumental the magazine was for Coach Prime during his career. I think it’s safe to say Sanders appreciated every time he was able to appear on the cover.
