CU Buffaloes defensive back Shilo Sanders told the media on Thursday that his Instagram post to athletes entering the transfer portal this week was a spur of the moment idea he first learned from his brother, Shedeur.
“Defense Transfers DM Me.” Shilo wrote on Instagram.
“Offense Transfers DM Shedeur Sanders”
(“This is Not Last Chance U.”)
While some people in the national media and social media criticized the post, the brothers said players want to hear directly from players about CU.
“The day I posted it was the first day the portal opened,” Shilo told the media. “Me as a player, you gotta know how I think. The more games we win, the easier to get looks, to get drafted, and I want the best opportunity to win, which means we get drafted earlier. So, I’m going to do all I can to get a good team, we got a good team now. I just want to make it easier for other guys to really feel like all right, if I want to go to Colorado it’s not hard. My dad has said he ain’t hard to find and we aren’t hard to find.”
Shilo added that Shedeur has been successfully recruiting players. “Now, Shedeur is really the pro at this. If you all look at his Twitter, he’s been doing that.”
In fact, Shedeur reached out to standout wide receiver LaJohntay Wester before he transferred to the Buffs.
“It’s a player to player thing,” Shedeur said. “They don’t want to get in the portal and have nowhere to go…They just want to know they have a home. It’s just better from player to player rather than from a coach to a player. I am able to tell you honestly how we’re going to use you in an offense.”
Following the press conference Uncle Neely touched on the subject with DNVR reporters.
“It’s amazing how many things are commonplace in football but when a Sanders does it, it’s like the world pays attention,” Neely said. “All across college football players recruit players, but now its like, ‘Did you see Shilo Sanders Tweet?’ Now, I’m not knocking it, I love it; we want all the attention in the world. But it’s beautiful to see that they recognize their gravitational pull. And they recognize what they see as players we need on this team depth wise and competition wise. And they reach out to them and they get feedback. They are the best ambassadors, man.”
