On this week’s episode of “Thee Rewind: Episode 32” Uncle Neely tells the story about how Deion Sanders nearly kicked him out of a team meeting. The incident in question happened while Neely was at Jackson State covering Sanders while he was coaching the Tigers. Here’s the version of the events as told by Neely when I asked him what would happen if his phone was ever to ring during a team meeting.
“Oh, I know I’m getting thrown out, and then I don’t have to guess,” Neely said. He continued, “Tolly. Let me tell you this quick Jackson State meeting story. I rode to the meeting with him (Deion Sanders) on a golf cart. We walked into the building together. Security needed me to get a package for him. I stopped to get the package. He kept walking.”
“He went in the door 20 seconds before me. When I walked in the door after him, he stopped the meeting. He said, hey man, if you’re going to cover this team from the inside, you need to be on time,” Neely said with a smile.
The subject arose while discussing the first week of fall camp for Colorado. Practice got underway on Monday and was preceded by a team meeting on Sunday. Sanders is known for his consistent rules when it comes to team meetings, one of the most important being no cell phones allowed in the meeting room. Neely records content with his phone so not having it is not an option. But neither is having his phone making any sort of noise.
On Sunday Sanders gave players the opportunity to take their phones outside after the first meeting was underway. According to Neely it will be the only time this year players are offered that one lifeline.
