Shedeur Sanders is a prototypical pocket quarterback who excels with a high completion rate by putting the ball on target. Last season he completed over 70 percent of his throws with 40 touchdowns versus six interceptions. That means he depends on his receivers to be disciplined and precise. He and Travis Hunter hit the ground running in Boulder because of their time together at Jackson State. But Sanders quickly found another go to man in Jimmy Horn Jr.
“Yeah, me and Jimmy got good chemistry because he know what I like. So it’s like whenever you got a receiver with a high IQ we on the same page,” Sanders said.
And knowing what Shedeur Sanders likes either comes naturally or comes through the force of Sanders’ will on his receivers.
“That’s what I’m big on with all the receivers is having him see through the same lens I see through. So we’re not just out there running around, we’re not out there just doing anything for no reason. It’s a reason. It’s a purpose for every time we go out there on the field,” he continued.
Sanders is an extension of offensive coordinator Sean Lewis out on the field.
“Working with Coach Lewis is amazing. He’s something I never had before. He pushes me to grow in different areas. I It could be while we’re eating food in breakfast, he’s pushing me to eat all my food. So it’s the little things that matter to him. So I’m extremely grateful that he’s he’s O.C. and he’s here and he’s here to run the show.”
While the CU offense has some precision, chemistry and attention to every detail it’s far from a completed piece of work. Sanders is well aware that there are still many things to figure out with all of the new pieces in Boulder.
“This offense is a whole bunch of trial and error. So it may be rocky at first, not in the game, talking about in practice. So it may be one day a receiver may have a bad day, but the next day they watching, they’re able to correct it. Jimmy some days he came out of the break the wrong way and we talk about it. I get on him about it, and the next day he follows. He has a good feel for the game and that’s all this offense is.”
With the beginning of fall camp quickly approaching, CU fans will see if the excitement is refined into results on the field. With the hope that last year’s dismal finish will soon become a long lost memory.
