On Saturday afternoon, Coach Prime and his Colorado Buffaloes entered Amon G. Carter Stadium facing the tide of an entire nation’s doubt. It was deemed unfathomable for the Buffs to leave Fort Worth matching the win count of the team from last year, as they were 21 point underdogs by kickoff. But to America’s surprise, doubt does nothing but fuel Deion Sanders and his football teams.
The script was flipped from the very beginning of the game, with Colorado scoring during their first drive. Dylan Edwards was the one to score the first touchdown of the Buffs’ season, giving him his first of FOUR touchdowns on the day. The crafty freshman running back also finished the game with 159 total yards. The game turned into a shootout from that moment on; whenever one team scored, the other retaliated.
The score stood at 17-14 as the two teams entered the locker rooms, with the performance of the Buffaloes leaving jaws on floors.
Knowing that there was still work left to be done, Coach Prime addressed his guys. Even thought they had done a phenomenal job proving the doubters wrong, they would have to work even harder to fully zip their lips.
“That was the appetizer. Now they ‘bout to get the meal. The only reason why they’re in this game is because we let them… You really didn’t know what we had. You really didn’t believe. But now you should… Everything we need is right in this locker room and right next to you. It’s up to you to make up your mind on how you want this story written. It’s a pen in every darn locker.”
You could feel the energy in the locker room as the Pro Football Hall of Famer addressed his team, and it’s safe to say it transferred back onto the field. Coach asked for execution and his players made it happen, trading haymakers back and forth but eventually squandering the Horned Frogs 45-42.
Uncle Neely was among those part of the electricity on the field after the Buffs’ upset win. In his interview with Defensive Coordinator Charles Kelly, the former Alabama assistant exclaimed, “A win is a win… We’re gonna enjoy the win for 24 hours, then we’re gonna come [back] and get better. Got a lot of room for improvement; we still coming.”
The first win of the ‘Prime Era’ was so emphatic it even brought players to tears. Mikey Harrison, who was a member of the disastrous football team from a year ago, emotionally spoke to Uncle Neely in the locker room.
“I’m like crying. I’ve been here for so long — it just feels so good to win… We’ve worked so hard. I love this [expletive]. I’m just so happy right now.”
