Deion Sanders doesn’t just coach his players. He doesn’t just coach his other coaches. He coaches an entire program. One of the early things Coach Prime did when arriving at Colorado was to have a “come to Jesus” meeting with all of his support staff. The meeting was attended by cafeteria workers all the way up to administrators. These are some of the things in part Sanders had to say.
“There’s a spirit that is riding in this facility and we’ve got to get it out. And it’s not a spirit of success. It’s a spirit of losing. It’s a spirit of failure. And we’ve got to get it out of here. We’ve got to get it out of here by prayer. We’ve got to get it out of here by work or we got to get it out here by termination. And we don’t want to be terminated. We really want to be elevated. We want to go to the next level,” Sanders told the group.
Coach Prime has a four pronged approach
Sanders explained his workplace philosophy through the alliteration of the letter r. He breaks down a dynamic workplace environment that begins with a relationship, respect, response and ultimately results.
“Relationship breeds respect, breeds a response, now the results. Results haven’t been good. so let’s go backwards. Do we have relationships or are you just in your own little area in your own the cubicle, just doing what you’re doing, getting your check and going on? That don’t work with me because we got to have a spirit of excellence. We’re different. We got to make people smile. We got to make sure people have joy. People have love. If you understand where I came from you understand where I am and why I’m so thankful and why I’m so proud and why I’m so energetic to bless these young folks.”
